Adolescents and Sleep-Deprivation: Should High School Classes Start La
Seventeen-year-old Jilly Dos Santos (a student of Rock Bridge High School) struggled all morning to be at school for 750 a.m. Rushing to put on makeup, skipping breakfast, and being tardy was common for Jilly. I will turn overI will drop out of school claimed Jilly when she found out that the school board was considering moving the start of the school day 30 transactions earlier (Hoffman 2). Jilly became a sleep activist because she knew that, biologically, adolescents go to bed and wake up later. Mary Carskadon, considered to be an expert on sleep and circadian rhythms of adolescents, claims that adolescents should suck up about 9 hours of sleep a night (Onyper). Many students suffer from sleep-deprivation due to alterations in the peak times of melatonin production, a hormone directly voluminous in sleepiness, and personal schedules, which affects the body in various ways (Nathan). For example, sleep-deprivation lowers levels of leptin, which is the main hormone involved in the regulation of appetite, thus increasing the chance of pig out (Spiegel). It also increases the chances of depression and affects the levels of cortisol, a toxic hormone induced by stress (Bergland). I believe that classes for 13-21 year-olds should start later because it would result in adolescents sleeping more, performing better in school, and reduce health risks. Based on evidence that adolescents need more sleep, psychologists are starting to believe that schools start in like manner early. Let us say that a school starts classes at 730a.m. Students would fuck off to wake up around 6 in order to defend the time necessary to get dressed, eat breakfast, and make it to school by 730. In order for adolescents to get at least 9 hours of sleep, they would have to go to ... ...014Hoffman, Jan. To Keep Teenagers Alert, Schools Let Them quiet In. New York Times. 13 Mar 2014 n.p. John Keats Fear That He Might Cease to Be Essay -- John Keats, poetry
During his last years, Keats ponders about what it would mean to die. He translates this into fears of what he hasnt yet accomplished and would manage to have time to do. This aspect of time is emphasised with the use of the word when at the start of the first three quatrains which is also used in Shakespearian Sonnets. The heading, When I have fears that I may cease to be demonstrates Keats belief, or rather, lack of belief in the idea of an afterlife. In the first quatrain of the poem Keats describes his full-bodied imagination, yearning to have gleand my teeming brain before it is too late, the image of abundance is instilled with the words high- piled and rich. The paradox of a field of shred is used to depict Keats brain being harvested of the knowledge into poems of his own creation. In this stanza, Keats reveals his want for fame through his works and his fears of being unable to fulfil this in his time. In the second stanza Keats demonstrates his use of nature in poetry. He describes the nights starrd face which could refer to Keats contemplating the beauty...

College Essay :: essays research papers
As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a individual(a) Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was champion instead of a conscious plectrum? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one and only(a) fundamental truth the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.Today, single Hmong women in their mid-twenties are living on their own, sometimes in different cities, earning their own income, and making decisions independent of both their parents and clans. However, in a community where marr iage defines the moment an individual becomes an adult, these successes still have not allowed them to be treated or perceived as adults by the family and clan. Further more(prenominal), in a culture where a womans role continues to be defined by the dominant male in her life either her pay off or her husband the independence of Hmong women in their mid-twenties has led to a displacement of traditional roles. My sister coined the term Christmas Tree Age when someone told her that in order to be able to find a good husband, a Hmong woman needed to be no older than twenty-five eld old. retributory like a Christmas Tree which is discarded after the 25th of December, the Hmong community seems to disregard women older than twenty-five as in-eligible marriage material. At twenty-five years of age, Ive attained many of the goals I set for myself as a young girl, starting a successful career in Corporate America, gaining monetary freedom and traveling the globe. Yet, to many of my rel atives, it seems my life is still lacking the most critical ingredient a husband. While in college, my single status seemed more acceptable. However, as I have continued to focus on my career instead of a husband and as I have reached the magic twenty-five, the choice to remain single has become an increasing concern for my family.

Developing Ethical Leadership
An ethical leadership means leading with the reek of valuing ethical values or considering the old fashioned modalitys, beliefs and other values that mint considers as valuable. It is the leading with both(a) the smack of altruism, kindness, integrity, loyalty, and trustworthiness which are possessed by a authoritative leader. In this characteristics and considerations to be considered, a question to the ethical means of leadership rises when we pertain to the historical holocaust. In the Holocaust Museum located at Washington DC, a individual who goes on visit inwardly the building will be able to be enlightened about the real meaning of the holocaust. Every stunt humankind that certain people could see inside would demand them feel the pain and the sufferings which the Nazi victims felt during the holocaust period. An example of an image which could lead a soulfulness back to the holocaust is the picture where the Americans felt the cruelness of the Nazi soldiers in man y of the Nazis concentration camps or bases where Nazi soldiers tend to make their prisoners suffer. While inspecting further, a certain image will take the tourists attention wherein the image is a picture of a thin and almost dying man handing an aluminum bowl. This image conveys the period when the Nazi soldiers had their prisoners dying because of malnutrition, thus, it also conveyed the same period when the Nazi soldiers force their prisoners to do hard labors.Inside the museum can be seen a large map which shows how far and wide the conquering of the German leadership did during the holocaust period on the year 1941 until 1942. Theres also a part of the museum where all the countries involved during the world war is painted, in this hallway the painted parts were the glass windows. As the strolling inside the museum continues, there were a lot to a greater extent figures and pictures which showed the cruelty of the Nazi soldiers led by the considered most cruel man on earth, H itler.Theres a room inside the museum called the tower of faces wherein all the sides of the room are filled with hundreds of pictures posted. Those peoples pictures which are posted in the walls of the room are those who are involved in the holocaust, some are those who became a Nazi victim and some are those who contri anded along the side of the Nazis.Theres another large image in the museum where one could see a group of people with the yellow star patch on their dresses just like on the movie Schindlers angle of dip which is used by the Nazis to easily determine if such a person belonged to the Jewish people. In general, there are 900 artifacts displayed in the museum, 70 video monitors which shows all the cruelty of the Nazis towards the Jewish people, and in the second floor of the museum, a tourist could realize and notice how the non-Jewish people risk their lives by trying to save some of the Jews. For the last destination of the tour, tourists are allowed to watch a film entitled the Testimony wherein those who survived the tragic holocaust narrated their real life story. The film would last for 60 minutes then after that tourists are then led to a hall where they could light their candle for the holocaust victims (Times, 2008).All the artifacts and the videos which are exhibited at the museum showed how the sense of true leadership was ignored and were not present at the period of the holocaust. The cruelness of the Nazi depicted how heartless Hitler is as a leader. The moral responsibilities of the Germans were be taken for granted a part of their ethical culture considers a mean kind of political values. Because of the continuous reigning of power and dominion to the riches of the Germans, theyve build up a confidence wherein they exceeded to the extent that they thought they could rule everywhere and that they are the most superior people who exist (Jones, 1999).According to the concord of ethical leadership, leadership should involve a not coerced relationship between the leader and his people or the people who are under the coverage of his power. In Hitlers situation, he has violated such an important consideration regarding with how he should have governed his people. The holocaust created a devastating nature of leader-people relationship lots of Jewish people were forced to work under the supervision of the Nazis and they are also forced to comply with whatever law the leader would implement (Price, 2006).The Jewish people should have been heard with their cries but instead they were oppressed and suppressed by the political system during the holocaust. Since good leadership means both technically and chastely benefiting, it is clear that though Hitler technically made a great contribution to Germany, he created an opposite effect to the morality of his being a leader (Price, 2006). An designate of this statement can be seen at the museum wherein lots of Jewish people are a group exposed without any clothing and are rugged in front of those non-Jewish aristocrats or politically involved people.A morally and technically good leader aims for the betterment of his country as well as for his people. In this way, the justification of the leadership would be justified under ethically valid leadership but the whole success of Hitler by aiming power and filth altered the evaluation of his leading by simply killing most of the Jews (Price, 2006). Hitler never considered saving even a single child soul but instead he commanded that all Jews must be seized and killed just like Anne Franks who wrote her own diary about the whole holocaust. In the entire worlds history, Hitler made the worst kind of violation of ethical leadership wherein morality is considered as a single pin of needle between million strands of hair. In taking the great responsibility of being a leader, morality is easily recognized, thus, it is the reason why there is a study of ethics in pitch to justify the true essence of leade rship.Adolf Hitler, as a leader, allowed exploitation such as rape and humiliation of Jews during his leadership, he used his position and power to come the authority over other people and instead of using it in order to command people to widen or do something to develop their territory more, he used his authority to do what he wanted and that is to rule his coverage with an undefeated power wherein all people fear and almost adoration him (Ciulla, 2003).The essence of leadership changed through the period of time, though however one may look and analyze the way that Hitler led his people, no one would recount that he is a great leader. The positive side of his being a leader such as being a great conqueror who contributed more territories in the history of Germany is overlapped by all the negativities of his other deeds such as killing, exploiting, oppressive and suppressive leadership, and most of being a leader who acted as he does not have a heart at all.Whenever one would wal k into the Holocaust Museum which has all the memories of the tragic holocaust inside, a certain person will fell the outburst of pain and sadness empathizing the victims of the holocaust. A horrifying movie which could be directly compared to the event during the holocaust is the Schindlers list where all Jewish people were cruelly shot without any good reason, raped without the ability to refuse, exploited and humiliated, and forced to work without being provided enough amount of pabulum to gain energy from (Spielberg, 1993).This experience of going to the Holocaust Museum made me realize that a good leader does not much contribute to his/her most way when he/she does not consider the goodness of his/her will towards his/her land and people. Thus, no matter how a leader conquers and rules the whole world under his authority, the true sense of leadership will nonetheless be judged on his moral or generally ethical deeds onward his ruling and loyalty to his obligation as a good le ader. This reveals the fact that no matter how small or few a leaders contribution is to his land, he will still be considered a good leader as long as he works for the betterment and sake of his land and people.ReferencesCiulla, J. New Media Implicated In The Globalization Of Culture Essay
The contemporary economics, culture and trade is becoming to a greater extent and more global with each deviation year. The diversity of services, goods and customs that could be uneven only when a couple of decades ago in different countries, and even in different states need been becoming less and less noticeable during the sustain years. The same detergents, cat food, mobile phones etc evict be found either on the shelves of the Canadian shops or on Russian and Indian markets. Some altogetherege that the process of globalisation gave most of the realisms population the opportunity to use the qualitative and relatively inexpensive goods which were previously available only to the dwellers of the countries were they were produced, hardly the others presume that the process of globalization is destructive for the market, as due to the creation of corporations the sm entirelyer businesses go broke, and thus the competition, which leads to the improvement of quality of the go ods produced, disappears. The influence of media on the contemporary culture is enormous. Media is what forms our tastes and preferences, it dictates us what to wear, to bar accomplish for, and even how should be be make water in different situations. It is the media that turned the American culture into the consumerist one, as nowadays it dictates that purchasing things is the most favorable and quick way to use the in demand(p) hearty status. Most of the media influences on race argon performed done denote, both direct and indirect one. Media is one of the primary(prenominal) means of transferring information among people, and of forming their opinions that is why advertising is so powerful nowadays. The specialists say it is media that makes the greatest wallop on the globalization of culture and trade all over the earthly concern. It is through the media that the same goods are advertised all over the world, and, moreover, the same ideas are propagated. Media creates and go unders the standards that are to be followed to be considered up-to date and fashionable. Of course, different people have various opinions on why the effect of advertising on globalization is so powerful. For example, Berger, who wrote Ads, Fads, and Consumer Culture states advertising are a lottery, as it is liquid that cypher knows what advertisement will be effective and what will not. Berger adds that the advertisement executives believe that they waste half(prenominal) of money, spent on advertisements, but no one knows which half it is. (2000, p.2-3). Nowadays media is one of the most powerful instruments of forming the opinions of its consumers. Most of the marketing strategies that exist nowadays are built on the influences of the media. It is the irreplaceable instrument for selling things, the process, on which the globalization is based. Decades ago people bough what they needed and their needs were dictated by their life conditions and financial status. It is nowadays that at first media creates the need in the circumstantial crossing or group of products in people, and than they purchase the advertised thing. Thanks to the media people no longer buy things they need they rather buy the attributes of the desired social status. Hirschman (2003) states that core societal values have an important role on advertising production and reception. and so, to go fashionable, a product has to be promoted accentuation its contribution to those societal values. Today media dictates people not only what they should buy, but as well how they should behave, and what should they long for, and those directions are actually the same all over the world. Lindner, the condition of the study, which analyzes the images of women in general interest and fashion magazine advertisements, states that advertisements often contain very subtle clues ab let on gender roles and may operate as socialise agents on several levels. Because advertisements are publicly broadcast, the men and women portrayed are often perceived to re wassail the whole population, and men and women in the advertisements seem to presume these portrayed behaviors, thereby validating the stereotyped roles. Media encourages contemporary people to build a career, and get decent education. It is emphasized in the most contemporary movies, TV shows, and books that to get a decent and well-paid position one has to have all the attributes of the successful person, like luxurious car, expensive costume, and the smallest mobile phone possible. And, as we can note those attributes of wealth and success are the same in the ads and movies that are produced worldwide. In the movies and TV shows all of those accessories seem to spring out of nowhere, they just depute the status of the personage portrayed. It is wonderful how the media succeeds in making various products fashionable. It creates the depression of the product being fashionable by attaching a set of characteristics to it that are evaluated positively in the society. Lets, for example, analyze the phenomenon of the popularity of the designers attire. If we take a D&G dress, worth 10,000$, we will see, it is not much different from one we can buy in the department store for 100$.The designer dress is so expensive because media have been popularizing this trademark for many decades. We can read or construe that this or that movie star was wearing an outfit created by D&G, Prada, or Valentino on the Oscar award ceremony, which is broadcasted in most countries of the world, and thus conclude that clothes created by those trademarks are the attributes of rich and successful people, so that its high cost will be justified. The advertisements published in the media create the signature of identification. Jackie Stacey in sorcerer Gazing Hollywood Cinema and Female Spectatorship states that the female spectator is addressed as a consumer of images of feminine beauty, and thus as an observer of oth er women, but also of herself. (1994, p.5). The advertisements worldwide are built using the same principle the potential buyer should be able to imagine himself or herself in the situation where the simulation that feature of speechs the product that is promoted, is depicted in the advertisement. And it is obvious that this strategy is effective anywhere, where it is used. William OBarr, an advertising specialist who wrote Culture and the Ad Exploring Otherness in the World of Advertising, presumes that advertising communicates subliminal messages regarding the social and economic dominance of its target audience. In his opinion advertising agencies are not culturally sensitive (1994. p.111). By advertising campaign, the media creates an impression in the potential buyer that after purchasing the advertised product he or she will receive the social and economical status higher, than her present one. Media usually positions the advertised products as a compulsory attribute the m embers of customers present, or target social group possess. In general all the advertising campaign pursue the goal of creating the ideal image of the person, who is a part of the target social group potential customers want to belong to. Thus the media portrays the person, using the advertised product in various situations and settings that the members of the customers target or present social group visit. The instruments the contemporary media use to make the products attractive for the customers are much more complicated than they were several decades ago. All of the advertisements that appeared in the newspapers, magazines or on TV forty or fifty years ago displayed the product advertised, and people who used them. Nowadays the situation has changed. Angela Goddard says it is not compulsory for the image to feature people in order to say something about them (2002, p.81). The advertisements shouldnt feature a human all the time. They should rather picture the surroundings and t he goals of the person, who is featured. This allows the consumers identification with the one, who uses the product advertised. The mechanism of group identification is one of the most effective instruments media uses in advertising, as people are used to the fact that every social group has its material attributes, and they often share the thought that it is enough to purchase those attributes to gain the membership in the target group.Media promotes this viewpoint by showing distinct differences between the representatives of different social groups. Lets recall how the personages are displayed in the movies and TV shows. After looking at the hero for few minutes we can recognize his/her social status without paying much effort. The differences between social group and classes are hyperbolized by the media, and the material attributes are what indicate those differences. Social scientists presume that it is TV that makes one of the most powerful influences on the process of globa lization worldwide. Almost every dweller of our country knows, that the TV appeared only several decades ago, and its only for forty or fifty years that almost every American family has a TV set at home. TV has become the greatest entertainment for the children and adults, an imaginary world we can drift to without even using the power of our imagination. The statistics says that television is on for almost 7 hours a day in an average American household. No wonder that the appearance of television changed the world a lot, as the division of time in the global society has changed with the appearance of this talking hypnotizing box. Except for reading books, going out or precisely talking with the friends and other family members millions of people worldwide just sit and watch TV. The stereotypes, ideals and goals that atr promoted by the TV programs worldwide, are almost the same, as the advertising techniques and goals are. As a result the life in different countries becomes more a nd more like the contemporary Western standard. For now television has become a problem for the educators, parents, and employers. at that place is no statistics about the quantity of lessons and workdays missed because of the TV, but the numbers are surely, giant. Lets try to see what exactly attracts the American children, teenager and adults to the TV screening. Jerzy Kosinski in his book Being There provided a great interpretation for the facts listed. In his book he described the emotions of the person who had seen the outside world only through the glass of the TV screen. By changing the channel he could change himself -the author notes. He could go through phases as garden plants went through phases, but he could change as rapidly, as he wished by twisting the dial backwards and forward. In some cases he could spread out into the screen without stopping. By turning the dial Chance could bring others inside his eyelids. Thus he cam to believe that it was he, Chance, who made himself be. (p.5-6) As you can note, switching on the TV set for Chance gave him the sense of power he didnt have in his real life. Chance, like the millions of people worldwide identified himself with the locomote figures on the screen, and he felt like he was capable to do something brave and smart, like the TV show and movie heroes did. There were times when people worked hard just for to feel themselves satisfied and valuable in any field they chose, but the TV screen brought an opportunity to get all the set of the positive emotions like love, affection, understanding and satisfaction for the price of one TV set. The time that was spent before hand on working, studying, doing something for to provide positive emotions and the feeling of social realization is now spent in front of TV. The emotions, whether positive or negative brought by it became a drug for most of us, as we have unlearned to put the efforts for reaching those conditions and getting those emotions without the help of the blue screen. People have always had the archetypes inside their mind, on the subconscious levels, which had been dictating their view on the world and things and people that exist in it. With the appearance of the TV those archetypes had grown and enhanced, as we see a lot of examples of them there, much more than the average 19 coulomb American would see during all of his life. The same thing is with stereotyping. Lets recall the reasons for popularity of Chance, the protagonist of Being There. It was just the stereotype millions of Americans shared that the person who negotiation metaphors (and they took the Chances talking about his garden for metaphors) is clever, and hi/her words are worthy of being noticed. It is the phenomena we can see on the TV screen every day.People there are not very clever, not very attractive or intelligent, at least most of them, but we still take their words for granted they have the authority that makes us listen them and hear what the y are saying. Today there are persons that are respected all over the world, and their words are able to change the lives of people in many countries. It became possible only with the development of the contemporary media, as without TV or the Web such a direct and unaffected spread of information would not have been possible. The purpose of this paper is not only examining the advertising techniques the capacious companies use for to lure more customers to their products. It is rather examining the influences media makes on the globalization of culture and trade that is taking place worldwide. The advertising techniques and strategies employed by the media can be used not only for promoting some products, but also for promoting the specific political regime, the specific lifestyles etc. Media is a very powerful instrument. Nowadays it forms the tastes and opinions of its consumers concerning the clothes, gadgetry, or food they buy, but using it much more meaningful and dangerous th ings can be promoted. This is a valid reason to put little more attention to the notional filling of the media images and slogans instead of consuming them irrecusably. There is no doubt that the new media have a very powerful influence on globalization nowadays. Thanks to the TV and the Web the life of people in different parts of the world becomes more and more alike with each passing year. People develop same ideals, principles and norms, guided by TV shows, movies and ads, while the Internet lets them forget about the thousands of kilometers that separate New-York, Paris, Moscow and Deli. People worldwide become more and more alike in all the senses of this word. There is no univocal answer for the question whether it is good or bad, as there are both positive and negative aspects of globalization. Nevertheless, this process is continuing, and it is enhancing with thee development of media.BibliographyKOSINSKI, J. Being There. Grove Press, 1999QUART, A. Professional Roles and Values Essay
Regulatory agencies, such as a state board of nurse, be government agencies that regulate nursing practice. They act to ensure nurses are competent in their practice and that standards of practice are met. These agencies examine nursing education programs, and are the ones who approve and accredit them. The agencies are responsible for granting licensure for nursing professionals and oversee the licensure exams. Their role also includes interpreting the state nurse practice acts and developing rules, regulations, and policies. When nurses do not follow those rules, regulations, and polices, or adjoin unsafe behavior, the agencies are responsible for determining appropriate disciplinary actions against the nurse. Professional nursing organizations are non-regulatory groups that help nurses further their development through education and networking. These groups are great for sharing ideas, technological advances, and trends.Often, there are fees to join the organization. Once a member, nurses usually are given a discount on literary works and other educational courses. These organizations act as nursing advocates, and are often involved in advocating for new legislation to improve the nursing practice. There are a wide range of associations. One example would be the Ohio Council for Home Care and Hospice (OCHCH). The OCHCH is a major source of support to infrastructure care agencies in Ohio by advocating for improvements in laws affecting seat health, helping to interpret those laws for its members, and offering a large array of educational classes. In my professional practice, I deal with the state board of nursing to keep up with licensure of our root health staff. I deal with the OCHCH on a daily basis to gruntle informed of new regulation, and current educational opportunities for myself and our staff. The Code of Ethics for nursing is put out by the regulatory organizations, such as the state boards, and are also usually found on thewebsite of var ious professional organizations, such as the ANA. In the Code of Ethics, Provision 4 states The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurses obligation to provide optimum unhurried care (Ameri faeces Nurses Association, 2001). This statement from the code of ethics greatly influences my individual nursing practice, as well as my original decision to become a nurse. My father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma when I was 19. At that time I was in college studying mechanical engineering. Dad had many hospital visits over the next few years. I was amazed at the differences in the nurses, and their effect on his hospital experience. Some were excellent. They took care of his unavoidably, both physically and emotionally.Others, did not. During one hospital stay, he was suffering a great deal from hurt. Despite multiple requests for pain medication, one nurse chose to sit at the nurse s station and talk with co-workers about their upcoming Christmas party instead of bringing him his pain medication. It was at that moment that I decided to go into nursing as a profession. I had seen first hand what a difference a good nurse can consecrate in a patient ofs life, as well as a not-so-good one. I wanted to be one of the good ones. If I could sack up a difference in even one patients life, it would be well worth it. Many years later, I still capture myself accountable for my own nursing practice, and delegate appropriately when needed, in order to take optimal care of my patients needs. I treat my patients the direction I would want my dad to be treated if he was still alive. Provision 2 states The nurses primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or conjunction (American Nurses Association, 2001).This is important in any area of nursing. I work in home health, and I emotional state this is especially true with my patients. As a home health nurse, I am one of many nurses who are the eyes and ears of physicians in the home setting. I feel its important to see a patient in their home environment in order to assess family and cultural influences that might have an impact on the patients outcome. We can then develop and individualized care plan and work with the physician to help meet their needs. At times, I have found issues in the home and met resistance when talking with the doctor to get new orders. Its important to advocate for the patient in those situations and clearly communicate the patients needsto the physician. There are 4 traits, or characteristics, within the Code of Ethics that I am going to discuss. The first is collaboration. I work in home health, and collaborate on a daily basis with other members of the interdisciplinary group. As a case manager, I am constantly in touch with the nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, and physicians to mak e sure all of the patients needs are being met. Often, at the time of sign patient assessment, only nursing is ordered for the patient. If I see that the patient is a fall risk, is having trouble bathing and dressing, has trouble with swallowing or cognition, is depressed, or needs pecuniary assistance, it is my responsibility to call the doctor and get orders to get other disciplines involved. Once they are involved, we work together, along with the patient and family, to come up with a care plan that is individualized for that patient. Throughout the patients course of care, we work together to make sure goals are being met. If not, we look at how we need to adjust the care plan in order to meet those goals. Confidentiality is another trait found in the code of ethics. When working with an interdisciplinary team, its important to work on a need to know basis. For example, the speech therapist doesnt need to know about the patients pecuniary issues unless it would relate to the p atients need to buy thickener for their food. The social worker, on the other hand, would need to know about the patients financial situation, in detail, in order to help the patient get set up with financial assistance in the community. Privacy is another trait that our multidisciplinary team deals with. In home care, its hard for the patients and families to allow others into their home, without feeling like their privacy is being invaded. Its important to, as a team, build up trust with the patients. The various disciplines work together to coordinate our schedules to best fit the patient/family in order to help maintain that privacy. For example, rather than all computer programing a visit on the same day, we stagger our visits throughout the week in order to minimize our time in the home each day. This in truth helps with patient outcomes as well, because there is a skilled clinician in the home on most days that can keep their eyes and ears on the patient. fairness is the las t trait I will talk about. Its important for me in home care to maintain moral integrity. It would be easy to prepare records, such as my time in and time out of apatients home. I feel moral integrity is important, whether practicing nursing, or in my e precise day life. I strive every day to uphold it. There have been many wonderful nursing theories over the years. One that I practice every day is Dorthea Orems self-care deficit model. Typically, a patient needs home care when they have suffered a debilitating accident or illness. As a nurse, its my job to find out what their self care deficits are, whether they be functional, cognitive, etc.I then work to individualize a care plan that includes therapy, disease process education, etc., that will help them get back to their antecedent level of functioning if possible. If they arent able to return to their previous level of functioning, its my job to help them adapt to their current level of functioning in order to care for themse lves, and prevent further decline. I feel that Jean Watson, who developed the theory of human caring, has had a big impact on my nursing practice. I think everyone, sick or not, wants to feel cared for. I try, as a nurse, to create an environment of caring for each patient I see. I feel its important to do this to provide an atmosphere for optimal healing. It can be difficult at times, especially in the home environment when there are other family members involved. Most families are very supportive, but at times there are difficult family members who cause undue stress for the patient. This is when its my job to act as a patient advocate, and help those family members cope in a way that is healthy for the patient and caregivers. It is important as a nurse to abide by certain principles. cardinal of those principles are nonmaleficence and respect for autonomy. I opened a patients case for home care recently and found Coumadin, Aspirin, and Plavix listed on his come off medication l ist from the hospital. I was concerned with this, but especially when I found him to be a high fall risk. I called the physician and corroborate that there had been a mistake on his discharge instructions. He was new to Coumadin, and the Aspirin and Plavix were supposed to have been discontinued. This is an example of nonmaleficence. My goal was to protect the patient from harm. The same patient was released from the hospital with an acute COPD exacerbation. Once home, he continued to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day while on oxygen. I explained the disease process of COPD in a way he could understand, including why he should stop smoking. I also explained to him the risks of smoking while on oxygen. He chose to keep smoking. This is anexample of respect for autonomy. It is our job as nurses to explain risks to them in a way they can understand. We have to respect their decisions at that point, whether we agree with them or not.ReferencesAmerican Nurses Association (2011). Code of E thics for Nurses With Interpretive Statements. Gilbert & Sullivan- the Mikado
Alex Ewanyk American Musical Theater History Writing Assignment 1 gigabyte & Sullivan The Mikado 2/7/13 Most would concur to say that two is better than one. From then on, their career together officially started. The rest is history. One of Gilbert and Sullivans most famous work was a comedy called The Migato. The synopsis of this amusing musical is as follows. Before the story begins, Nanki-Poo, the Mikados son, fled from his fathers palace to escape being forced to marry Katisha, an elderly lady of the court.Nanki-Poo has become a traveling performer who falls in love with Yum-Yum, however he cant marry her because Ko-Ko, her guardian, has decided to marry her himself. As Ko-Ko ponders his dilemma of trying to find someone to execute, Nanki-Poo appears, saying that hes going to give suicide because he cant marry Yum-Yum, the women he loves. Ko-Ko offers to allow Nanki-Poo to marry Yum-Yum for one month, after which, he will become his execution victim.Suddenly, Katisha appears and discovers Nanki-Poo, her missed love. After she is driven away, she rushes to inform the Mikado that his son has been found. As it goes into Act II, Yum-Yum is preparing for her one-month spousal relationship to Nanki-Poo. Ko-Ko arrives with the shocking revelation that he has discovered a law decree ing that when a married man is executed, his widow must be buried alive. Because of this the marriage between Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo is canceled. Nevertheless, Ko-Ko must find a substitute for execution or he will be decapitated by The Mikado. Nanki-Poo contrives a solution to save Ko-Kos life.A false contract confirming his own execution, but in exchange, he must be allowed to marry Yum-Yum and leave the country forever. Ko-Ko agrees. The Mikado finally arrives in Titipu. Ko-Ko believes that the purpose of his visit is to confirm that an execution has taken place so he produces the contract and proceeds to describe the execution with gusto. However, The Mikado has actually come to Titipu in search of his lost son and learns from the contract that Ko-Ko and his ministers executed his son. He declares them guilty of composing the death of the Heir Apparent.Their only hope to avoid execution is to show Nanki-Poos alive. Nanki-Poo hesitates to reveal himself, fearing that if Katisha lea rns that he has married Yum-Yum she will have him executed. The dilemma is resolved by Ko-Ko, who, at Nanki-Poos suggestion, woos, wins, and weds Katisha. In the end, all conflicts are put to an end as they celebrate Nanki-Poos marriage to Yum-Yum and Ko-Kos marriage to Katisha. This show quickly became extremely popular in England due to how it related to them but was also popular in the U. S. because of how funny, amusing, and ingenious it was.During the time The Mikado was created, the British were going through an all things Japanese craze. They were in a sense obsessed with the Japanese culture and customs for some reason. So in a sense, Gilbert was poking fun at this obsession while writing this play which centers on Japan in a funny fashion. Let it be understood that he wasnt making fun of Japan, but playing with the fact that people were trying to mimic the Japanese ways. As The Mikado got introduced to the U. S. , Americans actually started to adopt this trend of all thing s Japanese. Mikado-Mania was the name given to the American craze.A funny fact about The Mikado is that its one of the few musicals that every caused a diplomatic argument. When the prince of Japan visited England in 1907, the work was temporarily banned from being performed. This ban in turn backfired because the prince actually was hoping to see the play during his visit. This fact alone shows how widespread talk of The Mikado was. Gilbert and Sullivan will go down in history as one of the greatest put musical teams of all time, if not the greatest. With works like The Mikado, how could they not be one of the greatest?Their plays have even been performed in other languages such as French, German, and Yiddish. After 120 years The Mikado is still one of the most frequently produced musicals of all time and fully deserves to be. Bibliography Ainger, Michael. Gilbert and Sullivan A Dual Biography. N. p. Feedback in learning Essay
1.0What is feed rearward? The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great inspires William Arthur Ward A teacher carries a big right in area of breeding. Some people believe a teachers job is to teach and a schoolchilds job is to learn. In todays classroom, the role of teacher is totally different. Teacher as a facilitator of schooling, mentor for scholarly person and classroom supporter. The splendid teacher impart vex various actions in elbow room to help their pupils to be successful in their life. So that, one of the action is teacher should forget sagaciousness feedback in way to enhance the learning. Feedback is normally something which happens as a result of cycle didactics and learning action. It can give either before, during or after the learning had been occurs. Generally, what is feedback? Is it guidance, rating or praise? As mentioned by Ramaprasad (1983), feedback is education somewhat the gap between t he actual level and the reference level of a system line of reasoning which is engaged to alter the gap in some way.Further more(prenominal), the definition by Ramaprasad also supported of new research by Shute (2007) that define the feedback as cook up information communicated to the learner that is intended to modify the learners thinking or behaviour for the purpose of improving learning. Hence, in learning, feedback should usually presented as information to a student in response to some action on the latest level of military operation and help them to be better. Correspondingly the educationist carry that assessment feedback is an all important(p) part of learning cycle but nowadays students frequently express disappointment and frustration in affinity to the conduct of the feedback process. Students whitethorn complain that feedback on assessment is unhelpful or unclear and not fork out any tips to them to improve their current accomplishment. As a result, students w ill continuously repeat the mistake until they get to know the slump answers. Studies of the impact on student learning achievement indicate that feedback has the potential to excite a biteous effect on student learning achievement (Hattie & Timperley, 2007). Feedback should give immediately during the learning process. That can really help student to do self-reflection on their type of learning. They can figure out did he/she in the right track and how to improve their understanding.Types of feedbackMain focus of accustomed assessment feedback is to describes qualities of work in relation to the learning target. Teacher should give attention to the quality of their written feedback. There are two types of feedback, evaluative feedback and descriptive feedback. Evaluative feedback refers to a summary of student current achievement or performed on the particular task. This feedback is often come out with letter of grades, numbers, check marks, symbols and generals comment such as good, subtile and need help. While, descriptive feedback is specific or detail information in the form of written comments or conversations that help the student understand what he/she needs to do in improve their level of understanding. There are several examples of evaluative and descriptive feedbackEvaluative Feedback Descriptive FeedbackTry harder next period Your topic discussion is clear and reserve good examples, your next step might be to check back your grammatical errors 90% A+ polished Work Keep it up Youre made some simple mistakes in your calculation, remember back the formula use. Please check back the starting line step until the last step in your calculation for question 10.Table 1 Examples of Evaluative and Descriptive FeedbackBased on examples given, evaluative feedback more to provide a judgement on the quality of the learning task that student did while descriptive feedback focus on helps the student understand what he or she needs to do to improve thei r current achievement. Besides that, evaluative feedback shown to us those teachers only tells learner or students how they compare to others and descriptive feedback will provide specific information in the form of written comments or conversations more help learner. Regardless of the types of feedback given, either evaluative or descriptive, effective feedback needs to be informative, stir up and guiding. Informative feedback highlights strengths and weaknesses, giving specific examples or explanations. Prompt feedback is returned to students within an agreed timescale for the work submitted. Guiding feedback offer draw outions about how students can improve their learning. All of that combining together to help students to do better the next time. This statement also have supportby Hattie and Timperley (2007), they mention that the most improvement in student learning takes place when students got information feedback about the task and how to do more effectively. Below are exa mples of evaluative and descriptive feedback given by teachersFeedback as teaching style of staging As we already know, feedback provides information and guide to students by teachers about learning. That is one criteria of scaffolding. Scaffolding is the core of traditional apprenticeship. It is refers to given support that provides by expert or teacher as steps to improve their learning. It helps to reduce the gap between the student current level of understanding or performance and a desired goal. According to Hattle and Timperley (2007), they mention that depending on the nature and delivery of the feedback, it can have powerful irrefutable effects on student learning and engagement. Beside that in the research by Assessment Reform Group (2002), also mention that feedback as coaching and scaffolding students. The given feedback is an essential practice of assessment for learning. The process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learner and their teachers to decide wh ere the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get at that place by helping of teachers. That the main reason why the teachers feedback important, providing the support necessary for student to proceed towards the next stage or level and achieving the learning goal. Student will view the feedback as improving tips in which students receive information and construct meaning to close the gap. The students need to do something base on the guided giving in the feedback. Scaffolding instructional originated from Vygotskys ideas on learning. Vygotskys comes out with two levels of learning development. The first level is true Development that what learner has already reached. It is the level which the learner is capable of solving problems independently. The second level is called Potential Development which the learner not capable of doing the moment but have potential to do so. Between the actual and potential levels, Vygotsky said that there was what was called a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Proximal convey next. In context of feedback, it should act as scaffold by providing tips and support necessary for student to proceed the next stage or level. Without the support students may be unable to accomplish the target. As the result, students will extend their understanding and make improvement.Figure 3 ZPD (Zone of ProximalDevelopment) DiagramWhen teacher incorporate scaffolding in feedback, they become more to mentor and facilitator of knowledge rather than the dominant content expert. This teaching style that include with scaffolding will make student active role in class to achieving learning goal. Besides that, it also provides a welcoming and caring learning environment. I take care of you and I hope you will be success in future. Expiration in feedback on student assessment will make them realize that even out they did wrong is not means he/she is stupid student. They have room to improve. As conclusion, the best asses sment feedback, scaffold student to achieve the higher performance in learning target.Feedback as affectional domain in learningSince 1950s, research have been done in cognitive theory and educationist had use the Blooms (1956) taxonomies of learning. Bloom has mentioned that in learning should have three learning domains. The cognitive domain, affective domain and psychomotor domain. Feedback is referring to affective domain. In affective domain includes feeling, emotion, attitudes, values and motivation. As students that receiving the feedback, they need all of the aspect that include in affective domain. Teacher should play with all of these aspects. Teacher must provide clear understanding. Feedback should be brief, concise statements, in student-friendly language that describe what students are to know and be able to do at the end of feedback. Feedback can be one of the ways to encourage positive motivational belief and self-esteem. There are some ideas for motivating students . Teachers can start the feedback with praises like good job, excellent job, great, brilliant idea, You are starting to understand this but, This is quality work because, Two things you really did well are and many more on what they do well. Praise the work or process that focus in achieving the learning goal.Second step, teachers proceed with intervention that tells the student what needs improving and give lavish information in way to help them to do better. It can sound like Your thinking shows., One thing to improve on.., You need more, and many more. Next step, teachers share the improvement strategies such as Your next steps might be.., and You might try. The ways that teachers give thefeedback have relationship with the flow of affective domain as described by Krathwohl et.al (1964). They start with receiving, responding, valuing, organizing and ended with acting. Students will receiving the feedback as their new information of mark, wrong answers and the current level that he/she mastering the knowledge. Am I really understood or I just understand little bit? Step 2, responding. Students will respond on feedback given by teacher. They being actively participating based on feedback given to achieve learning goal.Step 3, valuing. They attaching worth to feedback given and try to do correction on the task. After they do the correction, they will organize the new concept and change their existing understanding. The last is characterization. They have the correct understanding and will apply the concept in correct way without misconception. It is the effective way that feedback can help students learn better in positive environment in implement the affective domain. Feedback will demonstrate appropriate ways of enhancing the performance on the task and offer strategies that invite more learner responsibility to improve. Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire William Butler Yeats Feedback as reflection on learning processReflectio n needed students to capture back on their performance in the task given. It also needs students to have clear comparison about their previous performance and current performance. There are three types of reflection that suite with the feedback reflection on your process, comparison of your performance to that of others and comparison of your performance to a set of criteria for evaluating performance (Schon, 1983). How feedback can be as reflection on learning process? Firstly, reflect on the feedback process. By feedback, students are encourages to look back at how they react and given answer on the task. Teachers will describes the qualities of work in relation to the learning targets. That can make them see how they might have done better and what they need to improve. That is the first step as feedback starter, reflect on achievement. Second, compare of student performance with others. These types of reflection are referring to evaluative feedback. In evaluative feedback teache rs will give grades, numbers, check marks, symbols and generals comment such as good, excellent and need help.Based on the feedback, students analyze by comparing their performance with friends in hope he/she will motivate to achieve better. The final types of reflection are comparison of student performance to a set of criteria for evaluating performances. These are focus on intervention and improvement that include in feedback. Teachers will share idea on what students needs to improve and gives plenteous information so the students will knows what the next step to apply. That really show the function of feedback as reflection, facilitates the development of self-assessment in learning. Conclusion Assessment feedback should play as important role in teaching and learning.Firstly, feedback is a way that teacher can use to determine and analyse how far your student gain the knowledge and what should you suggest to them in helping them success in mastery the knowledge. Secondly, asses sment feedback will attract low achievement students to be active learner and more prompt to achieve the learning goal. Overall, assessment feedback should take as important aspect in learning process. Teacher need to apply and change the feedback given in way to help student to be success in future.

The Cockroach
The poem The forget me drug, scripted by Kevin Halligan, is a meaningful and inte differenceing poem. As a Buddhist convert, the poet has use the journey of the cockroach to describe many aspects of benevolent life. Initially, Halligan presents human life as joyful and excited in the puerility . A good illustration of this when Halligan uses the phrases skirting a ball of dust, satisfied and start to pace to present it. As we all know, the cockroach represent humanity and his journey is an extended metaphor for human life.So from that point of view, we should understand that when the cockroach start to pace is when the human life starts. In childishness, we can get hold of fun by do meaningless things with no specific goal just homogeneous the cockroach skirt s a ball of dust and satisfy with that game. Children get under ones skin their parental protection and they have goose egg to worry ab out(p). Life was so easy, innocent and relaxed at that period of life. For the rest of the poem which also represents the rest of the life time we cannot see other words that use to describe the positive feelings of the cockroach. So maybe for Halligan, childhood was the most unaware stage of the entire human life. And through the poem, the readers can feel that this stage was short-lived. Secondly, Halligan shows that by and by childhood, life only remain with many dramas and tough decision. For example, the poet describe that on the cockroachs journey, he jog s in crooked ring, and scratch his wing as hes a victim of a mild attack. This show that sometimes in their life, humans lose their goal, at sea their direction or met a drama that they dont know what to do next only when circling the rusty table just like the cockroach. And a result of the loss of direction, the cockroach scratch es his wings, this is similar with how drama leave us with a bad mental health. Yet in life, we have to face a lot of drama and different kind of it. We can have drama like br oken heart, the loss of a relative, failure in career Day after day, we cannot get unfreeze of the depression it cause and the restlessness that worsened over time. Life after childhood continues scarce with more problems, and we cannot go through it easily . Human can get lost and they cannot get out of their own dramas . The persona now portrays human life as difficult and full of crises.
